Heterogeneity in Thymic Emigrants: Implications for Thymectomy and Immunosenescence
The development of mature, antigen-inexperienced (naive) T cells begins in the thymus and continues after export into the periphery. Post-thymic maturation of naive T cells, in humans, coincides with the progressive loss of markers such as protein tyrosine kinase 7 (PTK7) and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31). As a consequence, subpopulations of naive T cells can be recognise...
متن کاملRecurrence of thymic hyperplasia after trans-sternal thymectomy in myasthenia gravis.
A 23-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis underwent thymectomy in September, 1975 by a trans-sternal approach for the removal of an hyperplastic gland. Surgical intervention was followed by marked improvement of her symptoms. Five years later, symptoms recurred. In March, 1982 diagnostic pneumomediastinum disclosed an anterosuperior mediastinal mass which, on excision, proved to be an hyperpla...
متن کاملComparison of thymic histology with response to thymectomy in myasthenia gravis.
Fifty-four thymus glands removed surgically from patients with myasthenia gravis were examined using an accurate morphometric technique and the data compared with the response to thymectomy. There is a tendency for patients with relatively unreactive thymus glands to obtain a better result from thymectomy but this is not statistically significant.
متن کاملHypokalemic periodic paralysis induced by thymic hyperplasia and relieved by thymectomy.
IMPORTANCE Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is a muscle channelopathy based on mutations or predisposing variants or secondary to potassium wasting. In contrast to myasthenia gravis, an association with thymic hyperplasia has not yet been reported, to our knowledge. OBSERVATIONS We report a male patient in his mid-20s with progressive episodes of flaccid muscle weakness, associated low serum po...
متن کاملLeft-sided approach video-assisted thymectomy for the treatment of thymic diseases
BACKGROUND Video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy was developed more than 10 years ago and has become a widely accepted surgical approach. Most published reports regarding this procedure have focused on the right-sided approach. Since left-sided approach chest surgery is the first choice in cases of right pleural adhesion, large left thymus tumors, and tumors in close contact with the great ve...
